This is something I wrote about a year back, it is one of my favorites. Took me about 3 days to write the thing.
The Bitter Taste of War
The strike of vengeance
Ever sweet bitters with age
A life finished now
The dragon rests now
Fire from the dark heavens rain
The morning dampens
The lush field darkens
Silence and heaviness set in
A faint roar approaches
The clatter of steel
Agony and despair surface now
The mourning has begun
The flag calmly rests
Screams and echoes heard from beyond
Smoke and fire still remain
The return bittersweet
Cheers are turning into sorrow
Grief relentless that day
The dragon has passed now
Grass reclaims the memories of age
The toll of time ends.
